ACA Eligibility Factors for Enrollment in Healthcare Marketplace
The Affordable Care Act requires that every qualified individual in the United States have some form of health insurance. This is either through an employer, a private company, or the ACA Marketplace.
There are several factors that determine eligibility for enrollment in ACA health insurance plans. These include your income, your family size, where you live, and your age.
ACA Eligibility Based on Income Level
You can apply for an Obamacare subsidy if you earn less than 400% of the Federal Poverty Level. The amount of your tax credit is calculated on a sliding scale based on your income. In the state of Florida, the minimum is 138% of the FPL, any less does not qualify for ACA eligibility.
Say for example that you are a family of four with mom and dad working at the Walmart on Forest Hill Blvd in Greenacres. Your FPL is set at $27,750 which means your family can make between 138%-400% of that amount to qualify.
Now let’s say you are a single woman who is a concierge at the Holiday Inn on Federal Hwy in Port St Lucie. Your Federal Poverty Level is set at $13,590. What this means is your income must be between $18,754.20 and $54,360 to qualify for a subsidy.
Other Criteria You Must Meet to Obtain Healthcare Marketplace Coverage
Aside from income requirements, there are other things the government asks of you in order to qualify for coverage. Some of the additional qualifying criteria are:
- You must be a U.S. citizen *
- You must reside in the United States
- You cannot be currently incarcerated
- You are not currently receiving Medicare
* Non-US citizens may still qualify for coverage based on some of the following immigrant status exemptions:
- Green card holders or lawful permanent residents
- Cuban and Haitian entrants
- Victims of trafficking
- Those applying for asylee or refugee status
- Lawful temporary residents
