Medicare Supplement Plans: What You Need to Know About Medigap in 2025

Medicare Supplement plans are the go-to choice for many Floridians who want to limit surprise medical bills and get predictable out-of-pocket costs. If you’re enrolled in Original Medicare, you know it doesn’t cover everything. Deductibles, coinsurance, and copays can add up quickly.

That’s where Medicare Supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, comes in.

These plans help fill in the financial gaps in Medicare Parts A and B. They’re especially useful if you visit doctors frequently, need regular specialist care, or want coverage when you travel. The added flexibility and financial protection can give you peace of mind throughout the year.

At Absolute Best Insurance, we help clients from Broward County to the Space Coast find Medicare Supplement plans that fit their health needs and their budget.

Q&A: Common Questions About Medicare Supplement Plans

Q: Are Medicare Supplement plans the same as Medigap?

A: Yes. Medigap is just another term for Medicare Supplement plans.

Q: Do I need Medicare Parts A and B to buy one of these plans?

A: Yes. You must have both Part A and Part B to buy a supplemental policy.

Q: Can I be denied?

A: You can be denied or charged more if you apply outside of your Open Enrollment Period, unless you qualify for guaranteed issue rights.

Q: Are all plans available in Florida?

A: Not always. Some plans, like C and F, are only available if you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Plans vary by state and provider.

imgabi1What Are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplement plans are extra policies offered by private insurance companies to help cover out-of-pocket costs from Original Medicare. That includes things like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments tied to Part A and Part B.

These plans are standardized by the federal government. So, Plan G from one insurance company covers the same services as Plan G from another. But monthly premiums and added perks can differ, especially depending on where you live.

What Do These Plans Cover in 2025?

In 2025, you may have up to 10 Medigap plans to choose from: Plans A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. However, not all are available to everyone:

  • Plans C and F are only available to those eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020
  • All plans require you to have Part A and Part B
  • Availability may vary based on the insurance company and your ZIP code

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs
  • Part B coinsurance or copayments
  • First three pints of blood
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Part A deductible
  • Foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits)

Some plans offer full coverage for most of these items, while others, like Plan K or L, have lower premiums and only partial coverage.

How Do You Enroll?

You can apply for a supplemental plan once you’re enrolled in Part A and Part B. Your best time to sign up is during your initial Enrollment Period, which is the six-month window that starts when you’re 65 or older and first enrolled in Medicare Part B.\

During this time:

  • You can’t be denied coverage
  • Insurance companies can’t charge you more based on your health
  • You can pick any available plan from any private insurance provider

After this period, you can still apply, but coverage might be limited, and rates may be higher based on your health
