Key Takeaways

Your Medicare card does not turn into a pumpkin on January 1, so do you have to renew Medicare for 2027? No annual renewal application is required for Original Medicare. A continuing health or drug plan also renews automatically when you remain eligible and keep required premiums paid. But automatic renewal does not mean unchanged coverage.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) gives you time to check what is coming next. According to CMS’s 2027 plan outlook, about eight in 10 Medicare Advantage enrollees can stay in their current plan with the same or a lower premium. That figure does not promise the same doctors, prescriptions, or benefits.
At Absolute Best Insurance, we have helped clients in South Florida for over 20 years. We help you ask the right questions and compare coverage around your health needs. Our work includes Medicare plans, ACA coverage, life insurance, and dental plans.
Your annual review starts with your care, your medications, and your concerns.
What Renews Automatically, and What Needs Your Attention?
Your coverage type determines what happens when you make no enrollment change:
- Original Medicare: Parts A and B continue without annual reenrollment. You must remain eligible and pay required premiums.
- Medicare Advantage: A continuing plan renews automatically if you remain eligible, live in its service area, and pay required premiums.
- Standalone Part D: A continuing prescription drug plan renews automatically while you meet its enrollment and payment requirements.
- Medicare Supplement: A guaranteed renewable Medigap policy continues when you pay its premiums. You do not need to replace it each fall.
Keeping a plan is a decision. Make that decision after reviewing its 2027 terms.
| “Automatic renewal keeps your enrollment moving forward, but it does not freeze your benefits in place. Before you keep your plan, check that next year’s coverage still fits the doctors you see, the prescriptions you take, and the care you expect to need.” – Stacy Murphy, Owner/Operator – Absolute Best Insurance |
When Is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period for 2027 Coverage?
The enrollment window runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. Changes made during AEP take effect January 1, 2027.
You can switch health or drug plans during this window. You can also move between Original Medicare and Part C, subject to enrollment requirements.
Our annual enrollment guidance explains the choices available during this review. Start before the final week so you have time to check your prescriptions and contact your doctors.
What Happens If You Do Nothing During AEP?
If your plan continues and you remain eligible, you keep it under its 2027 terms. Those terms can change even when the plan name stays the same.
Read your Annual Notice of Change (ANOC). Continuing health and drug plans send it by September 30. It identifies changes effective in January. Contact your insurer if you don’t receive it. The official Medicare & You handbook explains these annual notices and coverage rules.
Use your review to answer four questions:
- Are your doctors and preferred hospitals participating in the exact 2027 plan?
- Are your medications covered, including their dosages and any approval requirements?
- Is your preferred pharmacy a preferred or standard network pharmacy?
- Do the plan’s benefits and expected expenses fit your care needs?
Keep your ANOC, medication list, and notes together. A familiar insurance company logo does not answer these questions.
“You do not have to change plans just because annual enrollment arrives, but you should know exactly what staying means for you. Read your plan’s changes and compare them with your current needs so you make a decision based on coverage, not habit,” says Stacy.
What If Your Plan Is Ending on December 31?
A nonrenewal notice requires action. Read it separately from an ANOC. It explains when coverage ends and what enrollment rights apply.
If your Medicare Advantage plan ends and you neither join another plan nor receive an approved transfer into replacement coverage, you return to Original Medicare on January 1. If the ending plan included drug coverage, that coverage ends too. Arrange replacement drug coverage unless you have other creditable coverage.
For a contract that is not renewed for 2027, Medicare’s special enrollment rules provide a window from December 8, 2026, through February 28, 2027. Complete enrollment by December 31 for replacement coverage beginning January 1. Enrollment after December 31 starts the first day of the following month.
Do not treat that extended window as a reason to leave January uncovered. Bring your nonrenewal notice to your agent before your current coverage ends.
Check the Care You Use Close to Home
A coverage review should reflect your actual appointments. Start with the doctors you see, then check the facilities where they treat you.
If you live near Woodmont in Tamarac, include specialists along University Drive in your review. For Deerfield Beach residents who use Broward Health North near Sample Road, check the hospital and each treating physician separately.
In Greenacres, appointments along Jog Road or visits to JFK Hospital in nearby Atlantis belong on the same checklist. A short drive does not establish network participation.
Residents of Tradition and St. Lucie West can bring their Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital care needs to our Port St. Lucie team. In Vero Beach, include appointments around Indian River Boulevard and Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital.
For Barefoot Bay and Micco residents, our Sebastian insurance team can help you compare coverage around the providers you use along U.S. 1. If your care takes you farther north to Holmes Regional Medical Center, our Melbourne team can include those visits in your review.
These Florida communities share an enrollment calendar, but plan availability depends on your service area. Our Lancaster agents in Pennsylvania can help you review care around Lititz Pike and Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital with the same attention to your exact plan.
Stacy explains, “Your coverage review should start with the care you actually use, including your primary doctor, specialists, hospital, and pharmacy. We help you check the exact plan against those needs because recognizing an insurance company’s name does not tell you which providers participate.”
If you split time between states, discuss routine care away from home before renewing. Compare out-of-network coverage against the doctors and services you expect to use.
Does Annual Enrollment Give You Automatic Medigap Approval?
No. The AEP does not create a nationwide guaranteed right to buy any Medicare Supplement policy without health questions.
Your eligibility depends on your enrollment rights and applicable state rules. A qualifying plan nonrenewal can create guaranteed issue rights for certain policies. Review those rights before canceling existing coverage.
Compare Medigap coverage options alongside your health coverage and a separate drug plan. Treat these as connected decisions.
FAQs About Keeping Your Medicare Coverage
Do I need a new Medicare card every year?
No. Keep your red, white, and blue Medicare card. Your private insurer sends a replacement plan card if one is needed.
Does keeping my plan keep all my benefits the same?
No. Review next year’s plan documents and verify your providers and prescriptions before deciding to stay.
Should I ignore enrollment mail if I am happy with my plan?
No. Read the notices first. Satisfaction with this year’s coverage does not answer what the plan will cover next year.
