Key Takeaways

The ACA Open Enrollment puts a deadline on next year’s health coverage, so let’s get your plan sorted before the clock runs out. For 2027 coverage, enrollment runs November 1, 2026, through January 15, 2027. Sign up by December 15 for coverage starting January 1.
Our agents help you compare options and complete your application at no additional charge.
Your first step is to check your costs instead of assuming last year’s plan still fits. The Office of Insurance Regulation’s published 2027 rate table shows a 10.4% weighted average premium increase before subsidies. Your own price depends on the plan, your location, and the financial assistance you qualify for.
At Absolute Best Insurance, our team brings over 20 years of experience serving South Florida. We help you compare individual and family health insurance, along with Medicare, life, and dental coverage.
We listen to your concerns and build an individualized solution around your doctors, prescriptions, and budget.
ACA Open Enrollment Dates for 2027 Coverage
Residents of Florida enroll through HealthCare.gov. Residents of Pennsylvania use Pennie, the state’s official marketplace. Both enrollment windows begin November 1 and end January 15.
Enroll by December 15, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027. Review your options early so you have time to compare costs, check your doctors, and confirm prescription coverage.
January 15, 2027, is the final enrollment deadline. If you select a plan between December 16 and January 15, your coverage starts February 1, 2027.
Pay any required first premium directly to your insurer. Selecting a plan alone does not activate coverage.
What Does the Affordable Care Act Cover?
Comprehensive Marketplace health plans cover essential health benefits, including:
- Doctor visits, hospital care, and emergency services.
- Prescription medicines and laboratory services.
- Maternity, newborn, and pediatric care.
- Mental health and substance use treatment.
- Preventive services and chronic disease management.
Insurers cannot reject you or charge more because of a pre-existing condition. Qualifying preventive services carry no cost-sharing when you meet the plan’s coverage and network requirements.
Coverage still comes with rules. Check the deductible, copays, prescription list, and provider network. Adult dental and vision benefits require a separate review because medical plans do not all include them.

How Household Income Affects Your Monthly Premium
Your expected annual household income and household size affect your eligibility for savings through the Affordable Care Act. For 2027 coverage, Marketplace savings calculations use the 2026 federal poverty guidelines.
The following annual income thresholds apply in both states:
- One-person household: $15,960 at 100% of the federal poverty level, $39,900 at 250%, and $63,840 at 400%.
- Two-person household: $21,640 at 100%, $54,100 at 250%, and $86,560 at 400%.
- Three-person household: $27,320 at 100%, $68,300 at 250%, and $109,280 at 400%.
- Four-person household: $33,000 at 100%, $82,500 at 250%, and $132,000 at 400%.
These figures are income thresholds, not insurance prices. Your monthly premium depends on your age, location, tobacco use, household members enrolling, and the plan you choose.
Premium tax credits lower monthly premiums for eligible applicants. Income alone does not establish eligibility. Access to qualifying employer coverage, Medicare, or Medicaid also affects your eligibility for savings.
When you compare individual health insurance or family health insurance, we review your expected income and available plans to calculate your costs after financial assistance.
What Could Your Monthly Contribution Look Like?
Your estimated monthly contribution toward a benchmark Silver plan depends on your annual household income and household size. The IRS’s 2027 contribution formula provides these examples for applicants who meet subsidy requirements.
For a one-person household:
- $23,940 annual income: Approximately $86 per month.
- $31,920 annual income: Approximately $180 per month.
- $39,900 annual income: Approximately $288 per month.
For a four-person household:
- $66,000 annual income: Approximately $373 per month.
- $99,000 annual income: Approximately $843 per month.
These are calculated examples, not insurance quotes. The benchmark is the second-lowest-cost Silver plan available to eligible household members. Your selected plan can cost more or less than that benchmark.
Your tax credit cannot exceed the eligible premium. When you compare individual health insurance or family health insurance, we review available plans and your eligibility for savings to determine your monthly cost.
Check Medicaid, Children’s Coverage and Employer Benefits
Pennsylvania expanded Medicaid, which covers eligible adults with income up to about 138% of the poverty guideline. Florida has narrower adult eligibility categories. Adults below the poverty guideline who do not qualify for Medicaid face a coverage gap without Marketplace premium subsidies.
Children qualify under separate Medicaid and CHIP rules. A family’s application can place parents and children in different coverage programs.
An offer of employer coverage also affects savings eligibility. We review the cost and coverage offered to each applicant before recommending a Marketplace application.
What Has Changed for 2027?
Enhanced federal premium tax credits expired after 2025. Original tax credits remain available to eligible applicants, but reduced assistance and rising premiums put pressure on household budgets.
Pennie’s current updates for Pennsylvania residents explain changes to financial assistance, income reporting, and eligibility. Some lawfully present immigrants lose access to premium tax credits in 2027. The application must reflect the applicant’s current eligibility.
Income changes also carry a financial consequence. Beginning with tax year 2026, repayment caps no longer limit repayment of excess advance premium tax credits. Report changes in income and household size during the year so your assistance reflects your situation.
Carrier participation changes, too. Cigna is ending individual and family medical plans for 2027. If your insurer discontinues your plan, review replacement coverage, doctors, and prescriptions before the deadline.
“A renewal notice is your cue to review your coverage. We’ll help you check the new costs, compare available plans, and understand your options before you make a decision,” Stacy says.
Why Coverage Still Deserves a Place in Your Budget
The Affordable Care Act protects access to comprehensive coverage when you have an existing health condition or need ongoing treatment. A plan also limits your spending on covered, in-network care.
For 2027, the federal out-of-pocket ceiling is $12,000 for one person and $24,000 for a family. Plans set their limits at or below those amounts. Premiums, uncovered services, and most out-of-network charges do not count toward that protection.
Eligible applicants choosing Silver plans receive cost-sharing reductions that lower deductibles, copays, and other covered costs. Choosing another metal category gives up those additional reductions.
A low premium does not settle the question of value. Compare your annual premiums, expected appointments, medicines, and potential out-of-pocket spending together when choosing a Bronze plan or another coverage level.
Check Your Doctors, Hospitals and Prescriptions Before Switching
Local care should shape your comparison. If you live near Nob Hill Road in Tamarac, check the doctors and facilities you use around Woodmont Hospital. For households along Hillsboro Boulevard in Deerfield Beach, that review includes specialists and services around Broward Health North.
Our Greenacres team on Jog Road helps you review providers close to home. In Port St. Lucie, compare access around Tradition and Gatlin Boulevard against your plan’s exact network.
For Vero Beach residents, include care near Indian River Boulevard in your review. Households around Barefoot Bay and U.S. 1 can work with our Sebastian agents. Our Melbourne office on South Harbor City Boulevard supports clients along the Space Coast.
Up north, our Lancaster team on Embassy Drive helps residents review care near home and along Route 30. Check access to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital if that facility is part of your care routine.
These local references do not establish network participation. Confirm each provider with the insurer and the provider’s office using the exact 2027 plan name.

ACA Open Enrollment Questions Answered
Can I switch plans after enrolling?
Yes. You can change plans during the enrollment window. Confirm the new start date before ending existing coverage.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
You need a qualifying Special Enrollment Period to enroll outside the annual window. Events include losing qualifying coverage, marriage, and having a baby. Medicaid and CHIP accept applications year-round.
Can I get savings if my employer offers insurance?
Eligibility depends on the employer plan’s affordability and minimum value. Family members require their own affordability review. Bring the employer’s coverage details so we can check.
Do you charge for enrollment help?
No. We charge no additional fee for our help. Insurance carriers compensate us. You remain responsible for your policy’s premiums and medical cost-sharing.
Is this the same as Medicare enrollment?
No. Medicare has separate enrollment periods and eligibility rules. Call our agents for Medicare enrollment guidance if you are turning 65, leaving employer coverage, or reviewing your current Medicare plan.
