Your doctor knows your history, so asking, “Can I keep my doctor if I change Medicare plans?” deserves an answer before you trade insurance cards. Keeping your doctor depends on the coverage you choose. With Original Medicare, you can continue seeing your doctor if they accept Medicare. With a private Part C plan, check your doctor’s participation in that exact plan and its out-of-network rules before switching.
Checking your providers has become easier. According to KFF’s guidance on checking doctor networks, Medicare’s plan comparison tool lets you enter up to five providers and identify a “must-have” doctor. Use that feature to narrow your choices, then confirm participation with the insurer and your doctor’s office.
At Absolute Best Insurance, our team brings over 20 years of experience meeting clients’ insurance needs in Florida and now in Pennsylvania.
During the annual enrollment period, we can help you compare Medicare coverage around your doctors, prescriptions, budget, and concerns. Our services also include helping you switch plans.

Your Doctor’s Access Depends on the Coverage You Choose
Original Medicare includes Part A hospital insurance and Part B medical insurance. You can receive covered care from any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare. You do not have to select providers from a private insurer’s network.
Ask your doctor’s office two separate questions:
- Do you accept Original Medicare?
- Do you accept Medicare assignment?
“Accepting assignment” means the provider agrees to the Medicare-approved amount as full payment for a covered service. You still owe applicable deductibles and coinsurance.
For most Part B-covered services, your share is 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after the deductible. Providers who do not accept assignment can charge additional amounts within Medicare’s rules. Medicare’s coverage comparison explains these differences in provider access and costs.
A Medicare Supplement policy, also called Medigap, helps pay selected costs left by Original Medicare. It does not replace Parts A and B or create a separate Part C provider network.
For someone receiving care along Jog Road in Greenacres, that distinction affects access to established physicians. The same applies to a Lancaster resident in Pennsylvania who wants to continue care at Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital. Check the doctor and facility separately.

How Medicare Advantage Networks Affect Your Doctor Visits
With Medicare Advantage, an insurance company provides your Part A and Part B benefits. HMO and PPO plans use provider networks, but their rules differ.
An HMO requires network care for covered routine services, subject to its plan rules. Exceptions include emergency care, out-of-area urgent care, and temporary out-of-area dialysis. An HMO Point-of-Service plan also provides specified out-of-network benefits.
A PPO provides covered out-of-network services, with different cost sharing from network care. Confirm that the doctor will see you under the plan and that the service meets its coverage requirements. A PPO does not give you an unrestricted promise of payment for every visit.
Review out-of-network coverage before choosing a plan because your doctor appears outside its network.
For Deerfield Beach residents who receive care at Broward Health North, check the hospital and each treating physician. In Tamarac, apply the same check to HCA Florida Woodmont Hospital and specialists along University Drive.
A doctor who accepts Medicare does not automatically participate in every private plan. The insurer’s name alone does not establish participation, either. Verify the exact plan offered for 2027.
How to Check Your Doctor’s Participation for 2027
Before you submit an enrollment application, work through these five steps.
- Identify the exact plan. Record its full name, plan ID, and 2027 coverage year. Different plans from the same insurer have different networks.
- Check the provider directory. Search your doctor’s name, specialty, and office address. Match the location where you receive care.
- Call your doctor’s billing office. Ask, “Will Dr. [Name] participate in [Exact Plan Name] for 2027 at [Office Address]?” Ask about your established patient status and upcoming appointments.
- Confirm directly with the insurer. Verify the same doctor, location, and plan year. Resolve conflicting answers before enrolling. Keep dated notes and a reference number.
- Check the rest of your care. Include specialists, hospitals, laboratories, therapy providers, prescriptions, and pharmacies. Review referrals, prior authorization requirements, and visit costs.
If you live in Tradition or receive care near Gatlin Boulevard, our Port St. Lucie team can help you check your physicians and Cleveland Clinic Tradition Hospital separately.
For Vero Beach residents, include providers around Indian River Boulevard and Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital. Hospital participation does not establish participation for every physician who treats patients there.
Compare costs alongside access. A plan that includes your doctor still needs to fit your expected appointments and treatment.
Stacy Murphy states, “The monthly premium is the easy number to see. The harder number is what repeated care could cost over a full year.”
What if Your Doctor Is Missing From the New Plan?
Start by comparing another plan that includes your doctor. Check its prescription coverage and total costs before deciding.
If you consider a PPO’s out-of-network benefits, confirm the doctor’s willingness to treat you under that coverage. Ask the insurer about the exact service, cost sharing, and approval requirements.
Returning to Original Medicare provides another coverage path. Evaluate its medical costs and coverage gaps, separate prescription coverage, and eligibility for Medicare Supplement insurance before leaving your current plan.
The federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period lasts six months. It starts the first month you are at least 65 and enrolled in Part B. After that window, insurers can use medical underwriting unless a guaranteed issue right or another applicable protection covers your situation. Annual enrollment does not reset that six-month period.
For a resident of Sebastian Highlands with an established specialist, keeping that relationship belongs at the center of the comparison. Our Sebastian team on U.S. 1 can help you evaluate the available coverage paths.
If you are receiving active treatment, discuss your upcoming appointments and transition arrangements with the new plan before its effective date.
When Is the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period for 2027 Coverage?
The enrollment window runs from October 15 through December 7, 2026. Changes made during AEP take effect January 1, 2027, provided the plan receives your enrollment request by December 7.
During this window, you can change private health plans, move between Original Medicare and Part C coverage, or join, drop, or switch Part D drug coverage. Medicare’s official enrollment guidance explains these options.
Your annual enrollment choices should account for the doctors and prescriptions you expect to use next year.
Do not confuse AEP with the January 1 through March 31 enrollment window. That later period serves people already enrolled in a Part C plan. It permits one change to another Part C plan or a return to Original Medicare with the option to join a separate drug plan.
Qualifying events, including a move or loss of certain coverage, create Special Enrollment Periods. Losing access to one doctor does not automatically create a right to switch immediately.
Check Your Doctors Even if You Renew Medicare for 2027
Keeping your current plan does not freeze its provider network, benefits, or costs.
You do not need an annual application to renew Medicare for 2027 when your coverage continues and you meet its eligibility and payment requirements. You still need to understand the coverage you are keeping.
Read your Annual Notice of Change. Then verify your doctors directly with the plan and their offices. Confirm your medications, pharmacies, hospital access, and expected expenses.
“Automatic renewal keeps your enrollment moving forward, and does not freeze your benefits in place.” explains Stacy.
Use the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period to make an informed decision about staying or switching. AEP gives you a review window, not a promise that this year’s coverage will stay unchanged.
Before you renew Medicare for 2027, check routine care away from home as well. If you split time between states, your coverage needs to account for the providers you use in each location.
