The Medicare program was created in 1965 to provide health insurance to people aged 65 or older, younger people with disabilities, and those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

There are four types of Medicare: Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D. Part A is health insurance that helps you pay for inpatient hospital care. Part B is medical insurance that helps cover doctor visits and outpatient care. Part C (Medigap) is a Medicare Advantage plan which offers benefits different from Parts A and B, which we’ll explain below. Finally, there is Part D which helps pay for prescription drugs.

What Are the Four Parts of Medicare?

Part A is a form of health insurance that covers hospitalization and other medical services. It is also known as Original Medicare. It is the first key part of Medicare, which provides coverage for inpatient care, skilled nursing facility care, home health care, hospice care, and some home health services.

Part B is health insurance that covers two key types of healthcare:

  • Medical services or supplies that are needed as part of a diagnosis or treatment of a medical condition.
  • Preventive services/healthcare to prevent illness like the flu and detect it at an early stage when treatment is most likely to work best.

Part C, also known as a “Medigap” or an “MA” Plan is offered by private companies approved by Medicare. If you’re on a Medicare Advantage Plan, it will provide Part A and Part B coverage in addition to extra benefits that may be offered (e.g. vision, hearing, dental, etc.) Most include Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D).

Part D is a prescription drug coverage program. It was created in 2006 to help Medicare beneficiaries pay for their medications. It is a voluntary prescription drug coverage program that helps people with Medicare pay for their prescriptions. The program is administered by private insurance companies and the federal government.
