What is Medicare?
Medicare is a federal program that helps pay for the health care costs of people who are 65 or older. It was created in 1965 and was designed to provide health insurance for senior Americans as well as those with certain disabilities and end-stage renal disease. This program is funded by the Federal Government but administered at the state level by private insurance companies.
There are two key parts to the Medicare program: Part A and Part B. Part A helps cover hospital stays and other medical expenses, while Part B covers doctors’ visits, lab tests, and other medical needs. There are also options for coverage through Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) or Prescription Drug Plans (Part D).
Is the Medicare Open Enrollment Period the Only Time I Can Sign Up?
Everyone who qualifies for Medicare can enroll up to three months before their 65th birthday. This initial enrollment period ends three months after the month you turn 65. The open enrollment period was designed to allow you to sign up if you missed that initial enrollment period deadline.
Another great benefit of the Medicare open enrollment period is that if you already have Medicare, you can make changes to your existing plan. If you are already enrolled in Medicare the open enrollment allows you to:
- Change your Part D Medicare plan or add it to your existing plan. A late enrollment penalty fee may apply If you didn’t sign up during your initial enrollment period.
- Change your Medicare Advantage plan.
- Switch to Medicare Advantage. You must already be enrolled in Part A and Part B.
- Switch to Original Medicare plus Part D and possibly Medigap from your current Advantage plan.
